Periodontics

Periodontics is a medical/surgical dentistry field of specialization that is responsible for preventing, diagnosing and treating pathologies that affect the gums, periodontal ligaments, root cement and alveolar bones to maintain oral health, function and aesthetics.
The main periodontal diseases that affect the teeth are:
Gingivitis, which is inflammation and bleeding of the gums without bone loss.
Periodontitis not only causes inflammation but also tooth bone destruction. If not treated quickly, it can cause tooth loss.

According to the World Health Organization, periodontitis is one of the 3 most common diseases in humans. After the age of 50, 50% of the population is affected by advanced periodontitis and the risk increases between the ages of 65-74 when only 8.7% of all patients have no signs of periodontal disease.

Treatment

The first phase of treatment consists of eliminating bacteria from the periodontal bags with scaling and curettage of the affected root and eliminating the plaque attached to the root under the gums. A check-up is done at about 4 weeks to evaluate the response to treatment.
Minor periodontal surgery is recommended for more advanced diseases and one or more teeth have to be removed in the most extreme cases.
Any of the foregoing treatments requires patients maintain excellent daily oral hygiene and attend periodic maintenance check-ups every 3-6 months to prevent the periodontitis from reappearing once cured.

Can implants be placed in someone who has lost teeth due to periodontal disease?

The success of advanced implants means dental implants are now a feasible and effective option for teeth replacement in patients with periodontitis. But, before any implants are done, the disease must be correctly treated to prevent additional bone loss and the spread of the disease to other teeth. The mouth must also be healthy.
