Paediatric Dental Care

Paediatric Dental Care

This is the branch of dental care responsible for the early treatment of dental needs, both preventive and restorative, in babies and children.
Our specialist in Paediatric Dental Care and Orthodontics is Dr Cristina Herrera Barreda, a determined advocate of early prevention in children.
The importance of maintaining good oral health in children lies in the fact that temporary teeth do important aesthetic and functional work and the proper eruption of permanent teeth is connected to the conditions of these first teeth or what people often call “baby teeth”.
Therefore, diagnosing and taking early action with the right treatment for each situation and based on the child’s age is crucial to the child’s proper oral/facial development and will prevent more serious problems as an adult.

The most common treatments

Orthodontics

Anomalies in maxillary and teeth positioning such as crossbite, overbite, a narrow palate, functional problems (atypical swallowing, sleep apnoea, inappropriate habits…) are the main problems in children requiring orthodontic treatment in most cases (link to the children’s orthodontics section).).

Cavities

Just as in adults, childhood cavities is a disease caused by bacteria in the mouth, generally as a result of poor oral hygiene, poor eating habits… It can also be influenced by factors such as saliva, malocclusion or tooth formation anomalies. Although some people think cavities in baby teeth are not important, not treating them can affect the formation of germs in permanent teeth.

Sealants

This is a simple and painless procedure which is quite common in paediatric dentistry where pits and fissures in the teeth that may develop cavities, mainly in the permanent molars, are filled with fine plastic. The main objective of this treatment is to protect patients from dental cavities, especially in children with a tendency to develop this oral disease.

Pulp treatment

This type of treatment is quite similar to endodontics as it is done when cavities have affected the tooth pulp. However, unlike endodontics, pulpotomy is done in temporary teeth.

Exodontia

This is done to remove a temporary tooth due to dental cavities associated with an infection or for orthodontic reasons. A tooth extraction must be recommended by a professional.

Space maintainers

This is a very common treatment among children who have lost a temporary tooth as, considering the term, it maintains space and prevents the adjacent teeth from moving until the permanent tooth comes in.

Remember that it is important for children to have contact and become familiar with dental care and the associated sounds and smells from a young age… especially with simple treatments that don’t cause pain so they come to accept it as a routine procedure and get all their check-ups.

At Control Dental Europeo, we know just how difficult it can be to find a professional to treat your children as the special people they are.
